Another modem question

Posted by Chris Fletcher at January 21. 2010

Hi all

I am dual booting with windows 2000 and suse linux 9.  I hardly use linux because I dont seem to be able to get onto the internet.  I have a netgear modem which came with a nice cd allowing me to load on the windows drivers.  There were no drivers supplied for linux and I have been unable to get it to work.  I have tried going through the procedures listed in the manual and a number of other books I have but to now avail.  I am reasonably computer literate but not into programming at all so I am finding it really difficult.  Can anyone out there help?

Erm, yes .. step 1, throw away your modem, whether using Linux or now. Then buy a router and all your problems will go away. I tend to recommend Thomson Speedtouch 546 units @ ~ £30.

Hi

I guess modem wasn't the correct term to use.  It is a router although I dont know the exact model number.  Forgive my ignorance.  It is plugged directly into an ethernet port (not a usb/winmodem) and still the problem persists.

Ok, if you have a working router, you need to try quite hard to not get an Internet connection. Run up a terminal session (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type;

lspci

And post what it says ..

Also;

ifconfig
