using a sky broadband router on linux
Hi, I have used linux a few times but always gone back to windows. when it comes to setting up a linux box, i have no problem such as printers, cameras or bluetooth devices.
but where i come unstuck is with 3rd party software or modems.
Today, i could do with some advice on sky, is it possible to get the sky broadband router working on fedora 9, which i like. as a wireless connection. so far i am happy with sky broadband so i would like to stay with them. at the moment i am using windows XP with fedora waiting in the drawer.

Hi,
It depends, is the Sky device a router (with a network connection to the PC) or a "modem" with a USB connection to the PC?
If it's a modem it may work, however I've been recommending people use routers with ADSL since it first came out so I'm not really in a position to talk about modems, nor do I really want to. If it really is a router, then yes it will work and all you need do in the Linux box it complete a default install.
(the reason for my attitude towards modems is probably becoming apparent)
I installed a Linux box with a router insite today, a clean ubuntu machine onto a router straight out of the box (Thompson Speedtouch 546, £28) , worked first time, ADSL setup + first connection took under 2 minutes. [with Plusnet, £9.99 pcm]
Thank you for the reply. with the router in question, i had the option
of either connecting it to to the PC via a ethernet port with the cable
they supplied or going wireless with a belkin usb adapter i had already
in the house. In the past, i have tried a modem to work under linux,
looking for advice on the web in order to get it to work without much
success.
so i will do a fresh install of fedora and at the moment dual boot between the two and hopefully it will work.

Mmm, based on your description, assuming all your wires are in the correct holes, I would expect the resulting installation to "just work". If there are any options on the router you will need "NAT" and "DHCP" turned on, but unless this is a cornflake box router, these options will be on by default.

I will try the direct ethernet connection, as the router needs to be pluged into the main phone socket according to sky which means i have to move the pc downstairs. on a another note, i did a yahoo search on you, i was surprised to find you are in pontypridd, i am only 11 miles up the line in merthyr tydfil.
