What wireless Router?
Hi i just bought a asus Eeepc 4G(701) my broadband connection is with virgin media there wireless router is not compatible with Linux. I also tried D-Link Air plus extreme set it all up then relised that i could not configure it using firefox browser so what i need to know is before i go getting anymore routers is what wireless router works with Linux, firefox and virgin media?
Mmm, couldn't tell you much about wireless / Virgin media, however I could recommend a couple of potentially better solutions. [I've never been overly happy with wireless connections, they tend to be unreliable, slow, intermittent and introduce additional / unwanted radiation into the home.]
If you can, a wired solution would be the best. I've been using "Thompson Speedtouch" routers for years, they do a 4-port model (506?) which works a treat on "normal" ADSL connections.
"The" solution to your problem could well be to use ethernet-over-power, which is what I use to get from the Office to the sitting room connecting up the X-Box 360. It'll set you back between £15 and £35 per station (depending on the speed you want) and it assumes that you'll have the router and workstation(s) in the same property / on the same ring main. (which is 'normal')
Installation procedure;
- Connect first device into three pin power / wall socket next to existing router
- Connect network cable from device to router
- Turn on power on wall socket
- Connect second device to nearest three pin power socket to your laptop
- Connect network cable from device to laptop
- Turn on power on wall socket
- Power up laptop. OR, tell laptop to refresh it's IP address (OR this may be automatic)
Done. This is the easiest possible configuration with no settings, I run an 85Mbps connection over three stations, total cost was £100, and I'm guessing prices have come down over the last year. It's never gone wrong, performance has been consistently good, and subject to historical negative reports from some other people, lag for game play is not an issue.
Here's a tidy Amazon link if you're interested, looks like it's now £20 per unit for what I'm using ...
