Canon ip2200 on Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)
I'm trying to help a friend install a Canon ip2200 printer in Ubuntu 9.10 (actually Mint 8, but it's based on 9.10 so should be the same), I've found 2 lots of instruction I'm hoping you will cast an eye over, and see which you reckon i should try first.
1) This is for an older Ubuntu verson (6.06)...found here:
I undestand libgtk 1.2 is no longer in the 9.10 repo's, so instructions to install found here:

2) This is for a different printer (ip1500), but I've modified it for an ip2200
0. install libcups2-dev: sudo aptitude install libcups2-dev
1. add to the sources.list "deb http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/ubuntu ./" and "deb-src http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/ubuntu ./"
2. install libcnbj and bjfilter: sudo aptitude install libcnbj-2.6 bjfilter-2.6
3. install dpkg-dev: sudo aptitude install dpkg-dev
4. get sources of pstocanonbj: apt-get source pstocanonbj
5. set current dir to pstocanonbj-3.3/ : cd pstocanonbj-3.3/
6. configure it: ./configure
7. make it: make
8. install it: sudo make install
9. copy or link pstocanonbj filter from "/usr/local/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonbj" to "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonbj"

Although it's possible to get almost any sort of hardware working on Linux, some configurations are easier than others. I've reached a stage where if I can see that hardware is going to be (a) really hard to make work and (b) stop working next time a Linux update comes through - I no longer tend to get involved in trying to make it work in the first place but instead recommend replacing the hardware with more "standard" hardware.
(I often use the word "decent" ;-) )
This tends to apply to printers from "Cannon" or "Lexmark". It's not a common response as the variety of hardware that does work is amazing .. but printers by certain manufacturers, and scanners in general - they're "time hovers".
Buy a HP 1320 ! :-)
I totally agree, if it was for a customer....I wouldn't bother...it would be cheaper for them to buy new 'supported' hardware than to pay me to spend time on the problem...BUT this is for a friend that I'm trying to convince (successfully so far) that Linux is the way forward.

thanks for the instructions. I implemented them, could install the drivers, but the printer doesn't work. As a rather newbe, I was already happy to follow the instructions, but have no idea how to proceed now. Maybe the attached log file has info that clarifies it?? I would be really greatfull if you could have a look at it. I am running linux Mint 10
