3. When it might be better to stick with Windows

Up one level

-

  • If you have a large IT department who are all trained up and qualified to use Windows, but who technically aren't that great.  Swapping to Linux is going to be almost impossible as you're probably not going to get enough help from the people involved to make it work. If they're good, then there's a strong likelihood that you already have at least one Linux server inside your organisation, whether you know it or not.
  • If you mainly use your PC for games or with specialised [multi-media] hardware. This is mainly becoming a gaming issue, but there are a number of proprietary devices out there with drivers that only support Windows. Be aware however that devices complying with current standards should be becoming available under Linux. Certainly I have USB cameras, scanners, printers, external hard drives, web cam's etc, now tend to work with Linux without issue.
  • If you like Windows because you like Windows - then don't change. I know people who can afford new cars who prefer to drive original Beetles, personal preference can count for a lot and sometimes logic simply isn't an issue.
  • If you don't have any free time and can't afford to spend any time retraining or relearning anything, sure stick with it.

This could be considered analogous to the company executive saying, "but I don't have time to exercise". You have the choice not to exercise... up to a point. There is of course the risk that if fail to exercise, you grow to be so bloated you can't move - personal choice.

  • If you work for Microsoft. I've heard a rumour Bill frowns (or worse) on employees who use Linux. I'm guessing if you work for the richest [or is he second?] man in the world, it's best not to piss him off.
